The Internet of Senses (IoS) connects in real-time the various senses of humans and machines (e.g., vision, hearing, smell, taste, touch, and even mind and emotion) to provide the immersive experience required in futuristic applications, such as digital twin, immersive communication, telepresence, and the metaverse. The technology required extends beyond the audio, video, and data transmissions supported by the current information and communications technology (ICT) and is widely viewed as the key driving application for next-generation mobile systems (i.e., 6G).
The Internet of Senses Research Center focuses on the development of key enabling technologies for the Internet of Senses, including three main research areas: smart sensing and computing, communication and networking, and extended reality applications.
As a proof of concept, we aim to demonstrate our technology on two representative applications: sports training and content creation. This requires the integration of sensing, computing, and robotics in the hardware, low-latency and semantic-aware communication networks, and creative XR applications. The center is devoted to high-level talent cultivation in the above areas through advanced research and industrial collaboration. The research outcomes and platforms will also contribute to the advancement of ICT, AI, semiconductor, and metaverse industries in Taiwan.
